The simple act of upgrading to double glazing can make a big difference to the comfort and value of your home. Double glazed windows prevent warm air escape and cold draughts in, reduce energy costs (especially in cool climates), provide sound insulation and help to keep your furnishings and decor safe from excessive sun exposure.
Double Glaze Your Home: Boost Comfort and Energy Efficiency in Brisbane
Double glaze your home is a type of sealed unit (IGU) comprising two glass sheets separated by a spacer bar and filled with an insulating gas such as argon or krypton. They sit in a frame of timber, aluminum or uPVC. The insulating gas acts as a barrier between the two glass windows, hermetically sealing the gap to form an air-tight insulating blanket which helps to reduce heat loss and condensation in winter.
During the summer, double glazing can also be an effective way to help keep your house cooler. It’s not uncommon to see a house with multiple windows without any sort of insulation in the window frames, making them extremely susceptible to the sun’s heat escaping through the glass.
The good news is that double-glazed windows are not as expensive as you might think. You can purchase a kit to install them yourself (although I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are 100% confident in your DIY skills) for around PS40 per window, or even less for existing uPVC windows. Alternatively, you can have them professionally installed for a fraction of the cost.
